FAQ for Parents

Why should I include my child in research?

Your child’s participation in our research allows you and your child to contribute to the scientific knowledge of how children develop and their understanding of the social world around them. Your child will engage in age-appropriate, fun, and rewarding activities, which will give us a better idea of how to improve the well-being of all children through research-informed educational practices and interventions. This educational experience could also foster an interest in science at a young age!

What’s a research visit like?

If you and your child decide to participate in a research study, your child will play a research game with one of our highly trained research assistants. If your child participates in our study, you will have a few responsibilities. Guardians will mainly be expected to bring their children to our lab space or assist them in accessing the Zoom platform and be present with them as we explain the study process before we begin. Members of our research team will conduct the actual study procedure. After your child’s tasks have finished, they will be able to pick a fun prize from our prize wall, and your participation is finished!

What do I get for participating?

Children will get to choose a small prize ( a water bottle, teddy bear, etc.). If parents complete one of our surveys, they will also receive a $5 electronic gift card.

How long does a research visit usually last?

A research visit at the DISC Lab usually lasts 45 to 60 minutes. However, this time includes parking, walking parents through the study procedure, signing the consent form, and children completing their study task with a member of our research team.

What are my transportation options?

If you choose to arrive by personal vehicle, we will arrange to have a reserved parking spot, located in lot 13, ready for your arrival for your research visit. There are also multiple bus stops near the Brogden Psychology Building if you choose to arrive via bus. We can also arrange a Lyft ride on our account for those who do not have bus passes or personal vehicles.

What if my child wants to stop participating?

If your child wants to be all done participating for any reason, they are free to stop at any time.
